Read MoreIn Years 1 and 2, children follow a thematic curriculum, led by their classroom teacher. The key learning skills of literacy, numeracy, creativity and curiosity are all developed through the study of the half-termly topics.
We recognise that the transition from Reception to Year 1 needs to be smooth, to provide continuity and consistency for the children. Our teachers spend time in both settings during key points in the year, to ensure that your child will be well prepared and ready to embark on the next phase of their learning. Our close, nurturing environment across the School ensures that teachers know your child well before they join them in the later years.
Rookwood creates in inquiry-based learning environment for children in this key stage, designed to stimulate a natural curiosity for their new environment. Learning themes such as ‘where we learn’ enable our teachers to introduce the subjects of History, Geography, Science, Design Technology and The Arts.
A varied curriculum
The timetable also consists of Music, PE and French which are taught by specialist teachers. The children’s learning is deepened by the opportunity to spend time in the library, the pastoral nest, visits from external speakers and authors, day trips to places such as Marwell Zoo.
The curriculum is designed to develop independent learners who take pride in their own learning and who can work as part of a team as much as striving to do their best themselves.
Supporting parents
At this important formative developmental stage for children, communication with parents is vital. We pride ourselves on a triangle relationship between the staff, children and parents which ensures that the children are involved in all aspects of their learning and assessments. Parents are encouraged to support their child’s learning through regular reading at home.
Rookwood offers many formal and informal opportunities throughout the school year for parents and teachers to share insights and observations of how the children are settling in and thriving throughout the year. Our wrap-around care is a daily privilege made even stronger by enthusiastic and consistent communication at parents’ evenings, learning journey sessions, within formal reports and the informal chats at school drop off and pick up.
