Creating space for every mind to shine

Neurodiversity week logo

Reflecting on all that has taken place in the last seven months or so, I recognised that I have the privilege of learning and working within an incredible community of people, each bringing their own unique strengths, perspectives and ways of thinking. Our pupils all learn and grow in different ways; some are deep thinkers, others are hands-on problem-solvers, some thrive in structured routines, while others flourish in creative freedom. Our staff also reflect this diversity; among them are meticulous planners, empathetic mentors, and innovative educators. What ties us all together is that we all want to create the best possible environment for children to learn.

As we recognise Neurodiversity Celebration Week at Rookwood, our ASPIRE values guide us as we strive to create a school where everyone belongs, where every voice is heard, and where every individual has the opportunity to succeed in their own way. By supporting each other, we create a school where everyone can thrive in a safe environment where everyone feels accepted and valued for who they are. Understanding different perspectives helps us grow as individuals. Learning how others experience the world makes us better problem-solvers and more compassionate people. Treating each other with kindness and respect means being open to different ways of thinking and learning. We all have a part to play in making our school a welcoming place for everyone. Feeling accepted for who we are is essential for happiness and success.

It is estimated that around one in seven people in the UK are neurodivergent. Breaking this down further, approximately 10% of the UK population is thought to have dyslexia, 8% have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and 8% have dyspraxia. Recent trends indicate a significant increase in diagnoses and awareness of neurodivergent conditions. For instance, ADHD prescriptions in England have risen by 18% each year since the pandemic, with notable regional disparities. A study found a 787% rise in the number of autism diagnoses between 1998 and 2018 in the UK. These statistics highlight the importance of recognising and supporting neurodiversity within our communities, ensuring that individuals receive the understanding and accommodations they need to thrive.

At Rookwood, we celebrate the fact that everyone learns and experiences the world in different ways. Neurodiversity is an important part of this, reminding us that there is no single ‘right’ way to think or learn. By embracing different perspectives, we not only support those who are neurodivergent but also enrich our entire community. This week, and beyond, it’s important to take the time to listen, to learn, and to appreciate the unique strengths within each of us.

I wish every member of the Rookwood community a restful weekend.

Best wishes,
Paul Robinson
