Rookwood pupils excel at Andover Young Musician of the YearSaturday February 15, 2020
Young musicians have competed in the eighth year of Andover’s annual contest of Young Musician of the Year organised by Chris Lynn of the ‘Sofa Club’ of Andover.
Eleven young musicians competed in non school uniform (to allow for judging on skill and musicianship) for the title of Young Musician of the Year contest held at Winton Academy on Thursday last week.
For the third year in a row Rookwood School saw its musicians take the top prizes.
Rookwood School’s Xen Medland was the winner of the age 12-14 category, performing a rendition of Galantis’ Runaway on the Drumkit. Having just passed his Grade 8 drum kit examination Xen gave an accomplished and highly musical performance. In the age 15-17 category Rookwood’s Ege Guclu won with a beautiful piano performance of D’ un Autre Été – L’après Midi by Yann Tiersen. Luke Davies also performed for Rookwood on the evening. Giving a highly commended performance of the 1st Movement of Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in A minor.
Judges on the night were Julian Dawes, a composer from London, musician Andrew Pomphrey, Sandro Murelli, a guitar teacher and former music professor from Milan. The event had the backing of David Mellor Jewellers, John Martin of Marston Robing and Test Valley Art Foundation, all of whom sponsored the night.
The winners were presented certificates and prizes by the mayor of Test Valley.
