Bee Class had a special visit from Mrs Reid’s African land snails this week, creating a wonderful opportunity for the children to engage with nature and learn about handling creatures with care. Those who had met the snails before helped guide their peers, explaining how to gently stroke the snails and ensuring everyone treated them with kindness.
During the visit, the children observed the snails and discussed how the changing seasons affect them, learning that snails hibernate if they get too cold. They were fascinated to hear that snails can be kept warm using a heat mat, and they compared this to humans staying warm with clothing. As the snails moved around, some of the children guessed their moods and decided the snails might be hungry, leading to a lively discussion about their diet.
This hands-on activity also encouraged the children to ask questions about the snails’ appearance, anatomy, and habits, with the most popular discovery being that a snail has a “foot!” The visit provided a great chance to develop curiosity while reinforcing the importance of washing hands after handling animals, helping to keep germs at bay.
