From Rookwood to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

William Swinnerton, former pupil at Rookwood School

We were delighted to recently welcome back William Swinnerton, a former Rookwood pupil who joined in Year 6 and stayed with us until the end of Year 11 in 2021. Since leaving Rookwood, William has gone on to pursue his passion for music with great success.

A talented and dedicated performer, William was awarded a well-deserved scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he is now in his second year studying for a Bachelor of Music in Vocal and Operatic Performance. His time at the Conservatoire has allowed him to develop both his voice and stagecraft, and he is already impressing audiences with his rich vocal talent and dramatic flair.

This Spring Term, we were fortunate to have William return to Rookwood for our Performing Arts concert, where he gave a spellbinding performance of “The Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera. His voice captivated the audience, and it was a special moment for pupils and staff alike to see a former student shine so brightly.

Watch the video below, where William shares his journey since leaving Rookwood, talks about how the school helped him develop a love for singing, and offers thoughtful tips for current pupils. There’s a delight for the ears at the end!

We are incredibly proud of William and all that he has already achieved – and we look forward to seeing where his talent and dedication take him next.
