Celebrating a year of achievement and community

As we reach the end of the summer term at Rookwood School, it is with immense pride and gratitude that I reflect on our year. Our community has continued to thrive, fostering an environment where every student can explore their passions, develop their talents, and achieve their fullest potential.

This year has been marked by many significant milestones and memorable moments. We began by celebrating our first set of A-level results, and we were thrilled to see our first Sixth Form students proceed to their first-choice universities or embark on gap years. Our GCSE results were equally impressive, with 85% of grades at 4 or above, and 30% of grades being a 7 or higher.

Our students have excelled not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities, sports, and the arts. Highlights include the Prep School performance of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Camelot and the Senior School’s sell-out success of Grease at the Lights theatre. The commitment shown by students in refining their performances, and the support from the entire Rookwood community, was a testament to the family nature of our school.

We also celebrated outstanding achievements in national competitions such as Rotary Youth Speaks, Rotary Young Writers, and the ISA Musical Theatre competitions. Our students have continued to shine in LAMDA and music examinations. Additionally, Mr Mills and our PE department organised a wide range of fixtures and events, culminating in our recent Sports Day, despite the unusual weather. We are particularly proud to have achieved the Platinum Sports Mark Award this year, following four consecutive years of holding the Gold award.

Learning outside the classroom has been a significant part of our year, with trips to Sky Studios, the Tate Modern, the Imperial War Museum, and many more. Our students have also participated in valuable workshops, such as those delivered by Hampshire Police on knife crime and county lines, and a Creative Writing day led by a published author.

Our extra-curricular clubs have thrived, offering a wide array of activities from Minecraft and Coding to Archery, Dance, and a variety of music options. We are fortunate to have a committed staff passionate about inspiring our students.

We also launched key initiatives to enhance our school environment. In January, we introduced a new fleet of minibuses, and we are looking forward to the installation of a roof over our swimming pool this autumn. Our expansion efforts also include adding a baby room to our Little Rooks nursery, welcoming babies from six months old starting in October.

One of the most fulfilling events this year was our Alumni Afternoon Tea, celebrating our 90th anniversary. We welcomed former staff and students for a day of reminiscence and enjoyed showing them how Rookwood has evolved.

As we look forward to the future, we are excited to welcome Paul Robinson as the new Headteacher at Rookwood. We will continue to innovate, inspire, and provide our students with the best possible education while maintaining our family ethos. Our goal remains to equip Rookwood students with the skills, knowledge, and values they need to succeed and make a positive impact on the world.

In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and, most importantly, our wonderful students. A special thank you to Mrs Hacker, Mr Brooker, Mr Winnett, and Mrs Stokes, who have stepped up to new roles in the past two terms to support the senior school and me. It has been a privilege to lead the school, and I am grateful to you all for your support.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable summer break. We look forward to welcoming you back for another exciting year in September.
