Year 8 pupil brings Jessie Pope to life

As part of her LAMDA Reading for Performance Grade 4, Isabel in Year 8 has chosen to perform “Who’s for the Game?” by Jessie Pope. This poem forms part of her theme, “Delusions and Realities of War.”

Written at the start of the First World War, the poem captures the patriotic fervour that once painted war as a noble adventure. Through her thoughtful interpretation, Isabel explored the stark contrast between that idealised vision and the devastating realities faced on the battlefield.

Commenting on her performance, Drama Teacher Mrs Blackmore said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the maturity and insight Isabel showed in her performance of ‘Who’s for the Game?’ She looked beyond the words to expose the delusions of war with real depth and conviction. A thoughtful and powerful performance.”

Isabel’s reading stands as both an exploration of how language shapes belief and a moving tribute to those who served. As we paused to remember on Tuesday, Isabel’s performance will continue to remind us of the courage, sacrifice, and lasting cost of war.
