Students capture Andover community in photography project

A group of Year 9 students took their learning beyond the classroom last summer, creating a series of striking community portraits of local residents in the heart of Andover.

The project saw students photograph residents and pair the images with short interviews, exploring the stories behind the faces. Designed to build confidence as well as creativity, the initiative encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, approach strangers, and engage thoughtfully with people from different walks of life.

The work culminated in an exhibition held last month, where parents and members of the local community who had taken part in the portraits were invited to view the finished photographs. The images were professionally printed and carefully curated, creating a celebratory event that sparked conversation and pride among students, families, and visitors alike.

Local residents Mr and Mrs Bolam attended the exhibition after being photographed for the project. Reflecting on the experience, Mr Bolam said:

“We thought it was a brilliant idea. It’s useful for the children as they had to step out of their comfort zones and talk to strangers. A great life lesson, as people don’t always say yes. It was brilliant to see young people going into the community to meet real people with real stories. The photos are brilliant and it was great to see them.”

The initiative was organised by Director of Enrichment, Mrs Blackmore, alongside Art Teacher, Miss Treasure, and Artist in Residence, Simon Peter Green. Simon brings extensive professional experience in photography and community-based arts practice, giving students the opportunity to learn from someone actively working in the field and to see how creative skills translate into real-world contexts.

“This project gave students the chance to develop confidence, empathy and creativity in a real-world setting,” said Mrs Blackmore. “Working directly with members of the local community helped them understand the responsibility that comes with representing others, and the pride they felt in seeing their work exhibited was wonderful to see.”

This project reflects a strong commitment to providing enriching, real-life learning experiences that develop confidence, empathy and creativity, while strengthening connections with the local community.
