Our Prep School pupils brought learning to life at the end of term with a joyful and meaningful Penguin Day, raising £50 for the Penguin Society and adopting a penguin to track as part of their ongoing commitment to protecting Antarctica.
The day – coordinated by Year 2 teacher and Champions of Antarctica lead, Mrs Grit Robinson – was the brainchild of the school’s Year 3 and 4 “Champions of Antarctica” club. The club’s mission is to share their knowledge of Antarctica with the rest of the school and raise awareness of the significance of the date 2041. Pupils arrived in an array of penguin-themed outfits and took part in creative activities such as singing, crafting, and a penguin hunt, all while learning about one of the last great wildernesses on Earth and the urgent need to protect its fragile ecosystem.
Jenny Cooke, explorer and founder of the 2041 Schools charity, spent the day with pupils, sharing stories from her Antarctic expeditions and inspiring pupils to become young environmental advocates. The 2041 School charity’s mission is to ensure young children understand the need, and the desire, to protect one of the last great remaining wildernesses on Earth.
“It’s always a joy to return to Rookwood,” said Jenny. “The enthusiasm and curiosity of the children is incredible, and it’s clear that they are growing into thoughtful, informed protectors of our planet. Penguin Day was the perfect celebration of fun, learning, and meaningful action.”
The funds raised will support the Penguin Society and allow the school to adopt and track its very own penguin.
“This was such a memorable day for the children,” said Mrs Robinson. “Not only did they throw themselves into the creativity and excitement of the event, but they also developed a deeper understanding of global citizenship and conservation. We’re so grateful to Jenny and the 2041 Schools charity for their continued support in inspiring the next generation of Champions of Antarctica.”
Rookwood has worked closely with the 2041 Schools charity for the past three years and was recently recognised by the organisation for its commitment to environmental education. The partnership continues to spark curiosity and action among pupils, encouraging them to think globally and act locally.
