EPQ Excellence: Sixth Former investigates local radio’s future

Our Sixth Formers undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – a nationally recognised award worth half an A level. It gives our students the freedom to research a topic they care deeply about and develop university-level skills in planning, analysis and presentation.

This week, Upper Sixth student John K delivered a captivating EPQ presentation exploring the question: “Is local radio relevant and viable in a digital age?”

The presentation was attended by members of the local community, including John Alpine and Richard Cooper from Warminster Radio, our headteacher Mr Robinson, many staff members across the school, several Year 10 and 11 students, and members of John’s supportive family.

John dedicated countless hours to this project, employing innovative methods to summarise his research. He conducted interviews with inspirational radio personnel, created surveys, and carefully analysed the data he collected.

His findings revealed that local radio remains relevant, with listeners valuing the sense of community and the spontaneous nature of live broadcasts. In terms of viability, the results were less conclusive, suggesting that a hybrid model combining radio and social media could be the future.

Reflecting on his inspiration for the project, John shared:

“Being a regular listener of Wave 105, the closure of the station made me realise how much it meant to me.”

During the closing Q&A, Mr Watts asked whether John would recommend completing an EPQ to younger students. John replied:

“It takes up a lot of your time, but it’s worth half an A level and you learn some valuable skills, so overall – yes!”

At the end of the presentation, Richard Cooper added:

“Having taken on many graduates over the years, John is a natural radio presenter and definitely has what it takes.”

John’s EPQ was a fantastic example of independent research, dedication, and presentation skills, and it sparked lively discussion among everyone who attended.

Over the course of this half term, we will be reporting on other Sixth Formers’ EPQs, showcasing the impressive work of our students and their achievements beyond the classroom.
