Reception make bread inspired by “The Little Red Hen”

Reception child making bread

Last week, our Reception children embarked on a hands-on learning adventure—making bread.  This activity was inspired by ‘The Little Red Hen’ book, where the children have been learning all about the journey of wheat, from being a tiny seed to becoming a loaf of bread.

After sequencing the story and understanding how wheat is grown and turned into flour, Reception class eagerly began their bread-making process. They took turns adding water to the flour mixture and kneading the dough, learning the importance of patience as they let it rise for a few hours.

The class then visited the Food Technology kitchen, where the children enjoyed shaping their own bread rolls. As they worked, they explored the different textures of the dough, using descriptive adjectives like “squishy,” “soft,” “stretchy,” “smooth,” and “tough.” Each child moulded their dough into perfect round rolls, and the excitement grew as they saw their creations take shape.

The result was six big, beautiful bread rolls, which the children proudly took home to share with their families. A great educational experience that really brought the story of The Little Red Hen to life.
