Preparing for University

A stronger likelihood of attending a Russell Group university

“Independently-educated sixth formers are more than twice as likely to attend Russell Group universities, three times as likely to gain a place at Oxford, and 10% more likely to gain a 1st or 2:1 degree”

Individual mentoring

From the early stages of Lower Sixth, individual mentoring sessions will allow students to discuss possibilities for the future beyond Rookwood, and we will encourage wider reading and research on a range of topics. Beginning to think about careers or university courses can be daunting, but it rapidly becomes less so once students engage with the necessary thinking and planning. A programme of outside speakers will also help to encourage aspiration and set students thinking about pathways that they had never previously considered.

Support throughout the journey

The support available to students will be highly tailored to their needs. Students who decide to apply for Oxbridge or other highly competitive courses can expect additional interview practice and guidance on the additional academic reading they will need to complete. Other students may decide to pursue an apprenticeship or enter the workplace, and the same level of individual support will be available to them. Some students change paths and decide to make an application during a gap year; they, too, will be welcome to come back to Rookwood for guidance and support.
