Curriculum (Years 3-6)

Our school motto comes to life in the Prep School – we dare to learn!

The curriculum for children in our Prep School, for Years 3 to 6, is engaging, varied and above all… a fun adventure! The subjects explored in the thematic curriculum are English, Maths, Arts, Sciences, Humanities, Languages, ICT and Sports alongside ‘Philosophy 4 Children’ (P4C) and Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE), which all ensure our children are experiencing a huge range of topics as well as developing their moral, social and spiritual understanding and learning essential life skills. The pupils’ learning is deepened by the opportunity to spend time in the library, the pastoral nest, have visits from external speakers and authors, enjoy day trips and experience fun residential outings too!

Developing independence

Our Prep School curriculum is designed to develop independent learners who take pride in their own learning and work and who can work as part of a team, as much as striving to do their best themselves. The children in Prep School move around to specialist classrooms and to be taught by specialist teachers for a number of their lessons and this furthers their independence as well as enabling them to be in subject appropriate environments.

Sharing the adventure with parents

Parents and families of Rookwood are welcome into the adventure – strong home partnerships creates this shared experience. Exciting projects come to life when our pupils are empowered to share their journey with parents and with the progress of each child being demonstrated through the enthusiasm they convey when talking about their learning discoveries which compliments our careful tracking and observations of their progress made in each year.

A learning journey to be shared

A triangle relationship between the staff, children and parents of Rookwood ensures that the children are involved in all aspects of their learning and assessments. More formally there are once yearly parents’ evenings and regular written reports, but we very much welcome regular involvement and conversations about each childs’ experience of school and the adventure of this, shown by our motivated and engaged pupils.
