Sixth Former to perform in British and National Youth Music Theatre shows

Drummer at Rookwood School

Sixth Form student Xen Medland is celebrating after being offered a drum position in the pit band for two upcoming shows run by The British Youth Music Theatre and The National Youth Music Theatre.

After witnessing Xen’s skill and passion at drumming during several of Rookwood School’s productions, Xen’s music teacher, Mrs Louise Parsons, encouraged Xen to audition for the places.

“Xen is a highly talented and dedicated drummer, so I am beyond thrilled to see his talent recognised by not just one but two incredibly competitive music theatres companies. At Rookwood School, we are fully committed to enabling pupils to nurture their talents and to perform on professional platforms to the highest level, so the whole Rookwood School community is absolutely delighted about Xen’s upcoming opportunities.”

Xen filmed several performances as part of the audition process (one of which can be viewed here). Alongside his A Levels, Xen is currently completing a Diploma in Drumkit.

Commenting on being offered the position, Xen said: “I was really excited to hear the news that I had gained a place in both the British Youth Music Theatre and the National Youth Music Theatre for their summer productions. I’m looking forward to working with industry professionals learning new music for these new musicals. I was inspired to apply having found a love of playing in a pit band in Rookwood School’s school productions.”

Xen will perform in The British Youth Music Theatre’s show “Harry & Greta” at New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich on Friday 4th to Saturday 5th August 2023. He will then perform in The National Youth Music Theatre’s show “The boy who sailed the ocean in an armchair” at The Curve in Leicester from the 14th to 19th August 2023.
