As the school holiday approaches, and we all begin to look forward to some time away from school or work, it’s worth reflecting on this time of year and why we are afforded a long weekend.
Easter is the central celebration of Christianity, commemorating the resurrection of Christ from the dead. The bible tells us that Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose again on Easter Sunday, signifying victory over sin and death and offering salvation to humanity. The resurrection is seen as the cornerstone of Christian faith, affirming Jesus’ divine nature and fulfilling biblical prophecy. This significant celebration coincides with several other significant religious and cultural festivals. In Thailand and parts of Southeast Asia, Songkran marks the Buddhist New Year, a time of renewal, purification, and community celebration. Similarly, in Judaism, Passover often aligns with Easter, commemorating the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. In Sikhism, Vaisakhi, observed in mid-April, celebrates the founding of the Khalsa and the harvest season. Meanwhile, Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, came to an end at the end of March, but sometimes overlaps with Easter, emphasising self-discipline, reflection, and gratitude.
These festivals share themes of renewal, transformation, and hope, making them deeply relevant to all of us at Rookwood. Ambition is reflected in the personal and spiritual growth encouraged by fasting, reflection, and self-improvement. Personal growth is central to these celebrations, as they encourage individuals to reflect on their actions, beliefs, and purpose. Integrity is demonstrated in the moral lessons each festival upholds; freedom in Passover, sacrifice in Easter, devotion in Ramadan, and unity in Vaisakhi. Responsibility is evident in the acts of charity and kindness that accompany these occasions, whether through Zakat in Ramadan, Christian almsgiving, or Buddhist merit-making. Of course, emotional well-being is at the heart of these celebrations, as they bring joy, connection, and a sense of belonging, reinforcing the importance of family, faith, and cultural identity.
So, as we step into this holiday period, I hope you can all take a moment to appreciate the significance of this time whether through faith, tradition, or simply the opportunity to pause and reflect. Whatever your plans over the Easter period and the long weekend, I hope you find time for rest and personal growth.
Best wishes,
Paul Robinson
