Yaviin Jayasoma: Former pupil and rising star

Yaviin Jayasoma

We were thrilled to recently welcome back Yaviin Jayasoma, a former Rookwood pupil from Reception to Year 11, whose journey since leaving Rookwood has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Yaviin was a quiet student during his early years at Rookwood, but by Year 11, he truly came into his own. He excelled academically, achieving 5 grade 9s, 4 grade 8s, and 1 grade 7 in his GCSEs – a remarkable achievement that set the stage for his future success.

After leaving Rookwood at the end of Year 11 in 2019, Yaviin went on to Bishops Grammar School, where he studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. His dedication to his studies paid off, earning him 3 A*s and 1 A in his A Levels.

Yaviin’s academic journey continued at the University of Southampton, where he is now pursuing a degree in Mechanical Automotive Engineering. His course includes a placement year and a master’s year, and he is already making waves with some incredible work. Currently on placement with Fortescue Zero, a leader in decarbonising vehicles, Yaviin has been involved in transforming a 70-tonne bulldozer by replacing its engine with a battery to achieve zero emissions – a project that showcases his commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Outside of his studies, Yaviin has a passion for travel and volunteering. Last year, he embarked on a two-week fundraising project in Uganda, where he and his team built a playground for local children. His team’s work aimed to improve the children’s education through play, and the experience left a lasting impact on both Yaviin and the community. This summer, Yaviin will travel to Kenya for a similar project with Play Action International, transforming an empty school field into a vibrant playground to nurture children’s development and wellbeing.

Yaviin’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and his willingness to dare to know and step outside of his comfort zone. We are incredibly proud of everything he has achieved so far and look forward to seeing the amazing things he will continue to accomplish in the future.

Watch the video shown below of Yaviin where he shares details of his journey since Rookwood, provides tips for current pupils as well as his passion for making a difference.

We wish Yaviin the best of luck in his studies, placement, and volunteering projects, and we cannot wait to follow his journey as he continues to make a positive impact in the world.
