On Friday 22nd November, Rookwood School celebrated its annual Ambitions Day, an immersive event aimed at inspiring students from Year 6 to Upper Sixth by exploring diverse career opportunities. Organised by the school’s Careers and Progression Advisor, Sarah Singlehurst, this year’s event focused on the Arts and Humanities, providing students with an enriching blend of workshops, guest speakers, and a dynamic careers fair.
The day was a resounding success, offering a unique platform for students to discover their passions and learn from industry professionals. Workshops featured an exceptional line-up of guests, including:
- James Fraser-Murison, Esports Consultant, who illuminated the growing gaming industry.
- Christopher Baker, award-winning filmmaker, sharing insights into production and storytelling.
- Simon Peter Green, photographer and arts expert, encouraging critical thinking about visual arts.
- Joseph Sartin, musician and former Rookwood pupil, who showcased the possibilities in music composition and performance.
- Representatives from The Army, who outlined career paths, educational opportunities, and qualifications available.
- Rachel Ward, language specialist and translator, offering a unique glimpse into the freelance world.
Students also engaged in dynamic workshops led by Rookwood teachers, including a day-in-the-life simulation of a Product Marketing Manager and a creative exercise designing a pop-up shop concept.
The Careers Fair expanded students’ horizons with an impressive range of attendees spanning multiple professions. Highlights included Ed Adams from The Anvil, photographer Simon Peter Green and artist Alex McGarry. Joining them were architect duo Peter and William Tesar (former parent and student), musician and producer Marc Burford, Monica Lubbock-Smith from ASK Apprenticeships, graphic designer Faye Brown, and Peta Green and Georgina Fort from Howden Insurance. Additionally, staff from Test Valley Borough Council and Andover Leisure Centre, archaeologist Indie Jago from Cotswold Archaeology, horticulturalist and alumna Caroline Hodge, and Jenny Abery from The Hawk Conservancy offered unique insights. Amy Lane from Hampshire Music Service spotlighted music education, while representatives from Hampshire Fire & Rescue, Hampshire & IOW Air Ambulance, and The Army completed the event’s diverse line-up, giving students an exciting glimpse into a wide range of career paths.
We also welcomed Rosie Jon, an extraordinary artist, storyteller and Rookwood parent, who held an inspirational workshop with Senior and Sixth Form pupils. Born uniquely without arms, Rosie defies convention by painting stunning artworks with her toes. Through her courage, perseverance, and faith, Rosie encouraged pupils to embrace their own unique talents and gifts, inspiring them to pursue purpose-driven lives. Her visit not only showcased her incredible artistry but also left a lasting message of resilience and creativity on both students and staff alike.
Throughout the day, students were forthcoming with their feedback on their experiences. “I have realised that studying arts and humanities will open up your mind to the world and how different people view it,” said one Year 10 student. Another added, “I was surprised by how passionate the visitors were about their jobs!” Following attendance at the product marketing workshop, a Year 8 student commented that she had “learned how important colours are in graphic design.”
Meanwhile, Prep School pupils enjoyed an array of engaging activities, including music, dance, theatre, and art sessions led by the visitors. These interactive workshops inspired creativity and gave younger pupils a taste of the vibrant opportunities showcased throughout the day.
Commenting on the day, Sarah Singlehurst said: “Ambitions Day is all about helping students see the world of possibilities ahead of them. This year’s Arts and Humanities theme resonated strongly with our students, and we are so grateful to all the professionals who took time to inspire the next generation. Looking ahead, I look forward to connecting with more local professionals to create exciting events focussing on other subject areas and related careers soon.”
Rookwood’s Headteacher Paul Robinson added, “Events like Ambitions Day are key to our commitment to preparing students for life beyond school and encouraging them to be ambitious for themselves and their futures. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm our students showed and the inspiration they drew from this event.”
